Mindfulness practices originated from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) communities; however, current adaptations of these practices in wellness culture often leave out BIPOC communities and have focused on prioritizing Western values.
Similarly, eating disorder treatment spaces have lacked representation and failed to center BIPOC experiences, leading to treatment disparities for BIPOC individuals.
In this panel discussion, we will explore how colonialism underpins current mindfulness practices and eating disorder treatment. Practitioners will leave with a better understanding of how to utilize mindfulness with BIPOC communities in culturally-inclusive ways with clients struggling with eating disorders.
We invite participants to submit questions in advance to guide the panel discussion and engage in dialogue.
- Participants will be able to describe how current mindfulness practices have colonialist underpinnings.
- Participants will be able to describe how traditional eating disorder treatment approaches have failed to center BIPOC needs and experiences.
- Participants will be able to identify strategies for incorporating culturally-inclusive mindfulness practices for BIPOC in eating disorder recovery.
Alexis Conason, PSY.D., CEDS-C is a clinical psychologist and eating disorder specialist in private practice in New York City. She is the author of The Diet-Free Revolution: 10 Steps to Free Yourself from the Diet Cycle with Mindful Eating and Radical Self-Acceptance (North Atlantic Books, 2021). She is the founder of The Anti-Diet Plan, a weight-inclusive online mindful eating course and coaching program available worldwide and the owner of Conason Psychological Services, a fat-positive therapy practice in New York City.
A lifelong New Yorker, Dr. Conason lives in Manhattan with her husband and two daughters. She loves all things related to food including cooking, grocery shopping, watching food shows, and of course eating! But most rewarding is helping her clients transform their relationship with food and experience the joys of eating.
She is a fierce advocate for helping people recognize and question the societal norms that encourage their feeling not good enough about themselves so they can stop fixating on shrinking their bodies and reclaim the space that they deserve in the world.

Brianna Theus is a black registered dietitian based in Southwestern CT who works with folks who struggle with eating disorders and disordered eating.
Brianna’s goal is to help you develop a better relationship with food, your body, and physical activity. Brianna specializes in BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) clients whom she helps navigate those same goals with an emphasis on how white supremacy shows up in their lives, specifically in nutrition and healthcare.
She helps them embrace their culture and lean into enjoying their cultural foods.

Fatema Jivanjee-Shakir, LMSW (she/her) is an eating disorder therapist, writer, and speaker.
She has extensive experience working with adults, adolescents, and couples at all levels of care.
Her work is strongly informed by the Health at Every Size perspective and intersectional approaches to healing.
Fatema has a special interest in working with BIPOC clients and has been featured in numerous publications, including The Los Angeles Times, HuffPost, PopSugar, and HelloGiggles.
Fatema is a therapist at Conason Psychological Services and a Board Member of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals New York chapter.

Jamie Lopez, MS, RDN, CDN, is a registered dietitian, nutritionist, and nutrition therapist who's passionate about food, science, and mental health. Jamie blends mindful eating with a non-diet, weight-inclusive approach into her virtual private practice. Jamie received her Master of Science degree in Nutrition and Food Studies at New York University.
