For several decades, interventions for eating disorders (AN, BED, BN) have been dominated by cognitive behavioral studies. In the past ten years there has been a third wave in research in which mindfulness and compassion-based interventions are receiving more attention. Mindful eating is becoming an effective tool for patients on the spectrum of restrictive eating and binge eating.

In this two-part webinar series, we will discuss and practice different mindfulness, mindful eating and compassion-based exercises which benefit people with eating disorders and those with unbalanced eating habits.

Several meditations will be offered as a home assignment after the first session and practiced on a daily basis throughout the following week. It is recommended that health professionals only offer mindfulness exercises to their clients with eating disorders if they practice these skills and embody mindful living themselves.

In part one of the series, we offer a framework that will provide participants with a better understanding of eating disorders from a mindful eating perspective, a resume of up-to-date research and the preliminaries to work with patients with eating disorders. In part two, patients with overeating and binge eating symptoms will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  1. The participants will be able to list the different mindful eating, mindfulness and compassion-based meditations developed for individuals with eating disorders (AN, BN, BED)
  2. By assessing the treat-drive-caring system (Paul Gilbert, PhD), health professionals can demonstrate new compassion-based approaches for their clients and to calm down the treat-drive system.
  3. Through neuroscience and up-to-date research in mindfulness, the attendees will be able to understand and embody different cognitive-affective mindfulness qualities
