Any health professional who looks a little further than the direct presentation of symptoms, can only conclude that many psychological problems of our patients have a traumatic core. This concerns single traumatic moments from the past or longer periods of chronic traumatization.
For many people, sexual abuse, abusive or violent relationships, bullying and chronic humiliation are at the bottom of their problems. The experience of the trauma, the way it is stored in the memory network and in the body, is largely a non-linguistic event. This means that in therapy we will have to use approaches that come into direct contact with the body. The work of Bessel van der Kolk, Peter Levine, Pete Walker, Francine Shapiro and others are central in this webinar.
We explore how mindfulness and compassion-based exercises might be useful for trauma survivors with symptomatic eating issues. The theoretical framework focuses primarily on the "sub-verbal" layer of the trauma and its mechanisms. Different examples and exercises will help to better understand the nature of trauma and how it leads to disturbed eating
Learning Objectives:
- Learning how the brain responds to traumatic events and what science says about mindfulness
- Learning treatment trauma-focused and mindfulness-based protocols to support individuals with disturbed eating behavior
- Learning the contraindications of mindfulness for trauma survivors
