“The Joy of Half a Cookie: Using Mindfulness to Lose Weight and End the Struggle with Food" is based on the principles and practices of the Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Treatment (MB-EAT) program in a way that is understandable for people with a range of experience with mindfulness. MB-EAT is based on well-recognized principles of food intake regulation and self-regulation theory, linked to the wisdom of mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches. Substantial research shows that many individuals inadequately attend to physical signals related to hunger and satiety, and are excessively sensitive to other eating triggers. The MB-EAT program is designed to cultivate both “inner wisdom” (greater use of awareness of hunger, fullness, and taste, and other triggers in making food choices) and “outer wisdom” (more personally satisfying and flexible use of nutritional guidelines to manage food choices and quantity). This program will highlight the core practices and related theory that help individuals better engage both their "inner wisdom" and "outer wisdom," as presented in “The Joy of Half a Cookie,” and briefly touch on the evidence from the multiple NIH-funded randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on MB-EAT with people with a range of eating issues, that have shown significant improvement in eating and emotional regulation.

Jean Kristeller, Ph.D. is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Indiana State University and the Founding Director and past- President of The Center for Mindful Eating. She is the author of "The Joy of Half a Cookie: Using Mindfulness to Lose Weight and End the Struggle with Food," Perigree/Penguin (2015), and over 50 professional papers and chapters. She has conducted research both on the psychology of meditation and the psychology of food intake regulation for over 35 years, and has received multiple NIH grants for research related to her program Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Training (MB-EAT) for individuals with binge eating disorder, diabetes, and adult and childhood obesity, at ISU, and in collaboration with Duke University, UC-San Francisco and Ohio State University. She received her B.A. from Swarthmore College, her M.S. in clinical psychology from the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, and her Ph.D. in clinical and health psychology from Yale University in 1983, with post-doctoral training in eating disorders at McLean Hospital. She co-founded the Behavioral Medicine program at Cambridge Hospital, Harvard University Medical School, and then joined the faculty in Preventive and Behavioral Medicine at Univ. of Massachusetts Medical School in 1985. www.mb-eat.com
